A SUNSHINE Coast organisation is warning about a scam that can leave victims with a huge phone bill.

Home Instead Senior Care Maroochydore issued the warning over the "one-ring scam", which is says it one of the latest to be reported to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission's Scam Watch.

"The telephone rings once, and unsuspecting call receivers will call the number back thinking that they may have missed something important," the organisation warns.

"The return call is sent to pay number, and in the course of discovering this is a scam call, you've already racked up a big phone bill.

"Be sure to inform your family members to never return a call from someone they don't know, never give any of their banking details or credit cards over the phone, and that no agency will ever ask them for payments in alternative forms such as iTunes card or bitcoins."
